Floating vs. Freestanding Bathroom Vanities
Compare visible floor, usable storage, wall conditions, and installation before choosing the cabinet form.

Floating and freestanding vanities can both look thoroughly modern. The difference is not fashion. It is where the cabinet meets the room, how the load is supported, how much storage remains, and how much installation work the design asks for.
Choose a floating vanity when visible floor materially improves the bathroom and the wall can carry the cabinet correctly. Choose freestanding when storage, wall conditions, or installation access make wall mounting an expensive compromise.
A floating vanity turns the wall into structure
A floating vanity is mounted to the wall with no cabinet base touching the floor. The gap below creates a continuous floor plane and makes the cabinet appear lighter. That effect can be especially useful in a narrow bathroom or a room with a strong stone or tile floor.
The wall becomes part of the furniture. Framing, blocking, mounting hardware, fasteners, wall finish, and the manufacturer system must work together. A qualified installer should determine the proper support for the exact cabinet and site.

Freestanding still requires a sound installation
A freestanding vanity transfers most or all of its load to the floor. It may sit on legs, a recessed toe kick, or a full plinth. These forms can still feel light. Slender legs reveal more floor, while a deeply recessed base gives the cabinet a shadow line without exposing plumbing.
Floor support does not eliminate installation concerns. The wall still needs to restrain and stabilize many cabinets. An uneven floor, out-of-plumb wall, fragile stone top, or tight side return can make a floor-supported piece demanding to install.

Compare visual weight in the actual room
Floating cabinets are often described as making a room look larger. The more precise point is that they preserve visible floor and create an open horizontal line. That can reduce visual mass, but a deep dark cabinet can still dominate a small wall.
A freestanding vanity can provide a stronger furniture note. Warm wood, considered legs, and a disciplined facade may be exactly what a pale bathroom needs. In a tight room, use the small-bathroom sizing guide to test whether visible floor actually improves circulation or only changes the view.

Storage usually favors the floor-supported cabinet
A floating vanity gives up the cabinet volume below its lowest drawer or shelf. In a generous bathroom, that may be an easy trade. In a compact room, the lost height can remove the tall storage needed for cleaning products, extra paper, or bottles.
The interior still matters more than the outside form. A freestanding vanity can waste space with a high decorative base, while a floating cabinet with well-planned drawers may outperform it. Count usable compartments around the sink and plumbing.
Cleaning is different, not automatically easier
Visible floor below a floating vanity is easy to inspect and can be easy to mop when the gap is generous. A low gap can trap dust while being awkward for a vacuum head. Freestanding legs create their own corners, while a full base avoids the space below but creates an edge at the floor.
Choose a gap that works with the cleaning tools used in the house. The most photogenic clearance is not always the most practical one.
Installation cost can decide the form
A floating vanity may require opening the wall, adding structural support, coordinating the mounting height, and moving plumbing so it remains concealed within a shallower cabinet. Tile layouts may also depend on whether the vanity is installed before or after the finished surface.
Manufacturer instructions are the authority for the cabinet. Kohler vanity guidance, for example, calls for appropriate wall support, a straight and plumb finished wall, a flat floor, and plumbing inside a defined rough-in area. Its installation guide shows why the delivered product and exact instructions matter.
Set height from the complete assembly
Floating vanities allow more freedom in mounting height, but that freedom should be used carefully. Cabinet height, top thickness, basin type, flooring, mirror, faucet, and primary users determine the finished relationship. A vessel sink can add considerable height above the counter.
If accessibility is part of the brief, the U.S. Access Board explains requirements for lavatory height, clear floor space, knee and toe clearance, controls, mirrors, and exposed pipes. Consult the official lavatory guide and the requirements that govern the project.
Plan plumbing before the wall closes
Floating drawers often leave a precise channel for the drain and supplies. A pipe that would disappear inside a door cabinet may block the drawer pack. Record existing conditions with our measuring guide, then keep final rough-in flexible until the cabinet is delivered.
Our standing advice is to receive the vanity before final plumbing. Let the installer compare the actual mounting rail, back openings, drawers, sink, and top with the specification sheet.
Let the wall settle the argument
Choose floating when visible floor meaningfully improves the room and the wall can support the cabinet without distortion or improvisation. Choose freestanding when you want more concealed volume, a furniture presence, or a simpler structural plan. Neither form is a shortcut. The best choice is the one the room can carry beautifully and the installer can execute correctly.
Ask the installer to describe the support plan before you buy the floating cabinet. If the answer depends on unknown framing, concealed utilities, or fasteners that have not been matched to the manufacturer instructions, price that investigation into the decision. A floor-supported vanity may be the more resolved choice once the wall is known.
